Warehouse: Songs and Stories

bm_web.jpgNot only was Bob Mould the guitarist and vocalist for Husker Du, one of the greatest, and loudest, indie bands of the 80s, but he has also been a successful solo artist, a DJ, an alt-weekly columnist, and even a writer and creative consultant for the WWE (yes, that WWE).

Now, you can add author, or rather, memoirist, to that CV: Mould has signed a deal with Little, Brown to publish an autobiography that will deal with all of the above subjects, not to mention Mould coming to terms with his homosexuality. It's somewhat surprising that even more rock autobiographies aren't out there; music's little corner of the world is a nearly endlessly fascinating one. That said, there are a few essentials in print; of course, since we're dealing with rock music, the oral history format is often employed. I mean, this ain't litereature - it's freakin' rock, dude.

Perhaps the most famed, and notorious, oral history is Please Kill Me, the Legs McNeil-hemmed history of punk that gave the world grisly tales of sex, drugs and more drugs. The reader is taken on a disgusting yet riveting journey from the late 60s through the early 80s; a world where Lou Reed is a god, CBGBs is a church and the East Village is a holy land.

A lesser known, though no less mesmerizing volume, is Bill Graham Presents, another oral history, this one tracing their extraordinary career of promoter Bill Graham, the founder of the Fillmore and San Francisco titan. Ever wanted to know what happens behind the scenes when one has to try and massage egos and juggle delicate situations in which major stars (ahem, Sting and The Police) need to be sure they are the ones in the spotlight? This book's for you.

All of which brings us back to Bob Mould's memoir, which is due in 2010.
