Solange is doing her damnedest to set herself apart from her older sister in every way imaginable. She sings about smoking weed on her upcoming album. She curses in interviews (see our recent chat with her for proof). She's open and public about her personal life. And all of that is refreshing. But the anti-Beyoncé stance can't help but work against her sometimes, as in this video, which is flimsier than anything her sister would stamp her name on. The silliness — starting with corny CGI effects artlessly illustrating the song's lyrics and continuing with a green dress that would fit in perfectly on Sesame Street — is too much. The scattershot computer "wizardry" ultimately gobbles Solange up in a bubble of cheapo cheese (and, as the clip's director, she only has herself to blame). Different is good; aimlessly inane is not.
