Devendra Banhart"Carmensita"
Director: Skinny
With this new Bollywood-inspired video, Devendra Banhart cements his status as indie-rock's funniest joke rocker. While the title may seem like a slight, it isn't — if there's one thing indie-rock (and freak-folk and nearly every other genre) needs more of, it's pure comedy. And the wickedly campy "Carmensita" video is the best outlet for this beardo's funny man side yet. It stars the singer's girlfriend, Natalie Portman, as a captured princess, along with an evil king, dancers, some kind of purple temptress and Devendra himself as a brave spirit warrior from the sixth dimension (or something). This is the kind of video that will be watched in smoky dorm rooms for years to come. The love triangle plot is stunningly nonsensical, the cinematography is wildly vibrant and the "acting" is spot-on. In fact, it may be Portman's finest on-screen performance since 1996's Beautiful Girls (sorry, Garden State fans) ... even if her makeup isn't as impressive as Devendra's.
