Pussycat Dolls"When I Grow Up"
Director: Joseph Kahn
We're still trying to decide if lead Doll Nicole Scherzinger is purposefully trying to recall her failed solo career on the new Pussycat Dolls single. Though Scherzinger was indeed featured in magazines (including Blender) and on TV in the run-up to her Doll-less CD, none of her singles took off and the record never came out. It didn't even get a chance to tank. Here, she sings "be careful what you wish for 'cause you just might get it" in her trademark feline snarl, but it's tough to tell if she's drawing inspiration from her own experience. The video doesn't make this any clearer. We see the girls dolled up in rainbow get-ups, looking like Looney Tunes exaggerations of your typical music video dancer chicks. They give people something to look at while in traffic, put building construction on hold while they prance atop scaffolding and get meta on a blown-out sound stage. (Britney Spears, who reportedly shot a cameo for the clip, does not appear — be careful what you wish for indeed.) Candy-colored insanity for aspiring pop tarts everywhere.
