Listen: The Teenagers — More '80s Than the Actual '80s?

"Make It Happen"

Director: One in Three

Ever wonder if hipster rock bands will ever run out of '80s ephemera to pilfer? It's a genuine concern. So while the Teenagers followed New Order's dance-rock formula pretty closely on their debut album, they skewed it with racy jokes and a distinct sense of French detachment. It's the sound of the '80s with a '00s twist. The trio's new video finds its inspiration from another part of Me Decade pop — the pulpy and instantly recognizable movie posters of Drew Struzan (Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Star Wars). Like Justice's recent Me Decade-referencing "DVNO" clip, "Make It Happen" is pure pastiche made by people who have spent way too much time staring at the poster for Blade Runner while crafting seamless computer effects. By definition, there's nothing new offered-up here. But the unflagging love of nostalgia can go a long way, especially when coupled with a hilariously self-conscious "hit" that heavily references its own awesomeness.
