Morrissey: Forgotten Genius
For reasons we can hardly explain without legal counsel, our recent list entitled "The Top 50 Geniuses of Pop Music" was delivered to the Internets with one glaring omission: The Smiths lead singer, solo artist, and indisputable genius, Morrissey. In order to make right a small part of the world he might agree is anything but, we add this entry to our now-definitive list. Sorry, Moz.
13.5 Morrissey
Fabulously Miserable
Genius credentials: It is arguable that whatever James Brown did for hip-hop, Morrissey did for emo. By transforming personal annihilation into high art and degradation into grandiose pop theater, the Moz went deeper than one thought possible, mobilizing a legion of loners and weaklings into a ferociously loyal army in the process.
His peers agree! "I would be devastated if Morrissey didn't like us" — Brandon Flowers, the Killers
Genius zenith: The Queen is Dead (Warner Brothers, 1986)
BONUS GENIUS: "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"
