WHAT: "Sensual Seduction" (Snoop Dogg cover)
WHY: When we talked to the mild-mannered British lads in Hot Chip a little while back, they spoke at length about their love of contemporary hip-hop and R&B. And Snoop's "Sensual Seduction" nods to many of the same '80s influences that clearly inspire Hot Chip's mutated funk, including Prince and Rick James. So once you get past the idea of five pasty white dudes taking on a song created by the Doggfather, this spot-on cover actually makes a lot of sense. But whereas the Snoop Dogg version comes off like a randy boast, Hot Chip highlight the track's sense of longing — lines like "she might be with him, but she's thinkin' 'bout me" take on wistful, almost sad quality. But the chuckle at the end of the live radio performance makes it clear this cover is a labor of love that's laughing with — and not at — its seductive source.
