Live The Von Bondiess Has-Been Garage Rock
WHO: The Von Bondies
WHERE: Blender Theater, New York City
WHY: Last week we watched an up-and-coming band called Titus Andronicus absolutely wreck a small sub-club gig in Brooklyn — it was like watching the exultant future of indie-rock right in front of our eyes. The garage rock showcase put on by Detroit's Von Bondies on Wednesday felt like the opposite in a lot of ways. Titus seem very 2008; the Bondies seem very 2002 (by-way-of 1973). The Titus show was filled with rabid fans who all but jumped the group by the end of the show; the Bondies show was less-than-filled with casual head-boppers. Titus didn't hold back one speck of spit; the Bondies were almost professional to a fault, playing perfectly fine replicas of their decent semi-raw brand of old-school rawk. They didn't play an encore — nobody seemed to mind. Click thumbnails to see pics from the show.
