Jack White Mauled by Wild Beast
WHO: The White Stripes
WHAT: "Conquest" [Director: Diane Martel]
WHY: You've got Jack battling an angry animal in full bullfighter garb and some Looney Tunes-inspired animation, but this clip's secret weapon is Meg. Her priceless reaction shots (yawning during Jack's chest pumps and eventually cracking up as he's brutally mangled) make the video and once again underline her vital background role. As much as any of the band's videos, this one doubles as a White Stripes allegory. While Jack yaps it up in interviews and does his rock star shtick on stage, Meg often seems bored or annoyed with such masculine posturing. So it's not much of a surprise when she takes pleasure in Jack's comeuppance here. The clip seems like a clever way to air out and send-up band tensions as much as it acts as a warped mirror to the song's twisty hunted/hunter storyline. And it's always fun to see Jack wearing more makeup than his big sister.
