American Idol Diana Ross Night (Goofball 80s Remix)
While the girls (especially LaKisha Jones) utterly crushed the guys when it came to singing on the first night of this year’s finals, the guys are the ones making American Idol interesting this year. Specifically Chris Sligh and Blake Lewis, who debuted drastically revamped versions of classics originally sung by guest star Diana Ross. Sligh went for a mash-up of Ross’s “Endless Love” and Coldplay’s “Clocks” and ended-up sounding like a Coldplay cover band trying out their first “original” song. Bad news. Blake—who lists Michael Jackson, Prince and, uh, 311 among his favorite artists of all time—tried for an electro remix of the Supremes’s “You Keep Me Hanging On” so audacious in its cheesiness, it had us laughing out loud. When Blake demoed the remix for Ross she said, “Blake was bringing a song I did in the '60s to today,” which wasn’t exactly right—his Banarama-esque redo brought the 1966 hit up to about 1984, tops.
