Whistle While You Work: Troy Lerwill

The hard-working rodeo clown from Utah shares his ultimate play list for taunting bulls and pulling off wacky stunts.

“Hearing the National Anthem at the start of the rodeo reminds me to be thankful that I am able to entertain the crowds with my goofy job. It just calms me. I get more nervous putting my makeup on than fighting the bulls. The scariest part is doing comedy in front of 8,000 people.”

“Real Wild Child (Wild One)” Christopher Otcasek
“My rodeo act is called the Wild Child. I do a specialty comedy motorcycle act that results in jumping my trailer and my pickup truck. This song is played while I do it, but I
can’t even hear it because I have a helmet on. But the crowd can, so they’re in tune with what’s going on.”

“Slow Ride” Foghat
“‘Slow Ride’ gets me going! This is another song played during my motorcycle deal. My heart starts pounding pretty good. The jump is about 60-feet long and around 20 or 22 feet in the air. I go up an aluminum ramp on the back of my trailer, and there’s no landing ramp. It’s a flat landing.”

“Sweet Home Alabama” Lynyrd Skynyrd
“It’s my job to fill in dead time between the rodeo action with jokes or whatever. Rodeo is a family sport, so the jokes are good-natured, like poking fun at rednecks—but no fat-lady jokes. Some clowns do them, but they give us all a bad name. This song will come on, and I’ll ask, ‘Are there any rednecks in the house?’ Down South, crap, everybody hollers.”
