will.i.am "One More Chance"
We still contend will.i.am's (lowercase, always) solo album Songs About
Girls is vastly underrated, but the guy isn't making it easy for us to
like him. Since he's the architect of most of this century's
most annoying songs (ahem, "My Humps"), he's easy to hate. But when the walking punchline isn't rapping about girls' asses in a stupendously dumb way on
Girls, the record's love songs are often lightly funky and fresh, like updated Lionel Richie. A great example is "One More Chance," which is
all about vying for a relationship redo. We wanted to like this video,
but we can't. While product placement is omnipresent on MTV nowadays,
this BlackBerry boosting clip takes it too far — the dude spins the
phone around in his hand like he was a model on the Price Is Right for chrissakes!
Granted, the notion of selling out is evolving and there's more leeway
now for bands to take advantage of commercial opportunities without
completely losing cred ... but still, this is over-the-top. We're
shocked he couldn't manage to insert the word "BlackBerry" into the actual song ...
there's always the next Black Eyed Peas album.
