We take rising British soul-stirrers the Heavy on a back-road trip to a Texas gun range. Casualties include bottles of water, cantaloupe and inflatable dolls:

| Armed with only a thermometer and their inimitable charm, So Cal hip hop duo Shwayze take us for a trek down 6th Street to find the hottest girl (literally) at SXSW. In addition to testing mouths, armpits and cleavage (not necessarily in that order), the laidback lads also took a break from playing doctor to drop in on TV host Matt Pinfield, piss of some jealous boyfriends and even grab some fajitas. Gentleman, we salute you!

The final installment of our SXSW Random People series. Enjoy!

[It's official: SXSW is all about Obama.]

[Left: Dude just realized he forgot his toothbrush back home. Right: Tony Leal of El Paso band Toko-Ri Get High shows us his world famous Gatorade bottle impression.]
[Left: Hide your daughters, it's the Bizarro Jonas Brothers! Right: Portable pianist Steve Taylor does his best "homeless Ben Folds" on 6th Street.] |

Lackadaisical, funky and effortlessly cool, the Virgins embody downtown New York City's singular vibe. Lead singer Donald Cumming is probably still best known as the "antlers kid" from Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" video but, with his band's rising status thanks to excellent gigs like this one at SXSW, all that could change:

This Denver band are at the forefront of indie music's current gypsy rock trend — violins, tubas and om-pah beats abound. At SXSW, they turned a Texas club into an Eastern Eurpoean bistro during their daytime gig:

Chicago hip-hop prodigies the Cool Kids killed their set at our annual SXSW party (see pics from the gig here). In this video, Cool Kid Mikey Rocks and a couple friends spit some of their favorite rhymes (including Snoop and Dre's "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang") and holler at Beijing (?!).

Besides being a debauched industry schmooze-fest, SXSW is a moment when kindred spirits can get together and talk shop. In the case of tween punks Care Bears on Fire and ex-tween punks the Donnas, "shop" includes getting into over 21 clubs, having your folks drive you to gigs without being embarrassed and loading your rider with diva demands like Sourpatch Kids and Junior Mints: In the words of CBOF's Izzy, "Yay!"

<< This Year's Breathless Hyperbole Award goes to genre-busting Brooklynite Santogold. [L.A. Times]
+ If her SXSW showcase (featuring vegetarian macaroni and cheese!) is any indication, Rachel Ray just may be indie music's hottest new tastemaker. [AP]
+ The Most Dangerous Show Award goes to F***ed Up, who incited a hectic mosh pit and nearly took down a shaky Austin bridge during an impromptu gig early Saturday morning. [NME] + Paramore are not breaking up. To prove it, they played an exclusive set in Austin on Friday sponsored by (who else?) Hot Topic. [MTV] |
