Jenny Lewis "Acid Tongue"
Stop us if you've heard this one before: cosmopolitan indie-pop star
walks into a shoe repair shop and the dubiously spiritual head cobbler
claims to have the cure to her emotional ills ... Ok, so this title track from Jenny
Lewis's upcoming solo LP might have some random Doors-y imagery (burning fires,
dropping acid, um, cobblers), but its feet are on the
ground. The song isn't trippy as much as it's holy, largely thanks to a
choir of harmonized back-up singers who give Lewis's tale of lost love
a winning gospel tinge. Dylan's in there, along with Tammy Wynette and
Conor Oberst. But Lewis's ever-improving vocals are the star here, and
she sounds incredible without anything to hind behind. By the end of
the song, she's quit the drugs — turns out they were just
getting in the way. Through the fire, she's content with just watching
it burn.
