Editors' Picks: May 2008

Blender April 14 2008

Julien McNab, Executive Editor

Matthew Dear - Asa Breed (Ghostly International 2008 Black Edition)
Hints of Joy Division ("Deserter"), dashes of Talking Heads ("Elementary Lover"/"You Know What I Would Do") and traces of Beck ("Vine to Vine"/"Midnight Lovers") are sprinkled throughout Dear's delicious third effort. Of the four bonus tracks Hot Chip's remix of "Don and Sherri" and Four Tet's remix of "Deserter" stand out.

Familjen - "Huvudet i Sanden"
With the impending recession and the daily stresses of modern life, how liberating would it be to hobble on over to the edge of town, rip off your clothes and run through the woods naked? Johan Söderberg strikes again (see Det Snurrar i Min Skalle), directing another eerie yet amusing music video for Swedish electro pop artist Johan T Karlsson. The twist at the end is just plain silly, and reminiscent of an old Dave Allen werewolf skit.

Grand Theft Auto IV Soundtrack
There's still quite a bit of mystery surrounding the soundtrack for Rockstar's latest addition to the GTA franchise, but what we do know is that players will be able to initiate the purchase of actual MP3s of songs that they hear on the various radio stations in the game via an in-game interface. Rockstar have partnered with Amazon to provide a catalog of around 150 DRM-free MP3s, including songs by Elton John, Fela Kuti, the Greenskeepers and Nas. Read more ...

HBO's John Adams
What's that, the pathetic fellow from Sideways as a Founding Father?! Paul Giamatti pulls off the role convincingly. David Morse is a stately George Washington, Stephen Dillane a sphinx-like Jefferson and Tom Wilkinson a brilliant and free-loving Ben Franklin.

Mike Errico, Senior Editor

"Junker Blues," Champion Jack Dupree
In case you thought you had problems.

"Mirrorball," Elbow
In case you thought you were a sensitive soul.

"Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans," Louis Armstrong
In case you thought the government did you wrong.

"The Way You Look Tonight," Frank Sinatra
In case you thought you were smooth.

Ryan Dombal, Blog Writer

"Supernatural Superserious," R.E.M.
Their new album is being overrated by nostalgic former college rock DJs nationwide, but this song is the real deal.

"Orange Shirt," Discovery
White dude electro&B from the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend and the singer from Ra Ra Riot. Not a joke!

"Babies," Pulp
Naive pervert rock at its finest.

"If I Ain't Got You," Alicia Keys
Our cover girl's best song ever.
