Editors' Picks: June 2008

Blender May 15 2008

Julien McNab, Executive Editor

"Les Violons Ivres," Agoria (Metawuffmischfelge)
Drunken violins make beautiful music.

"William Howard Taft," the Two Man Gentleman Band (Heavy Petting)
Happy, cheeky music your grandpappy can appreciate.

"Pack Jam (Look Out for the OVC)," Jonzun Crew (performed live in 1983 on German music video show Formel Eins)
Future sonic warriors take over the set of Hee Haw? Jonzun Crew were ahead of their time, both musically and stylistically. Which French electronica duo do you think may have gotten inspiration from the look?

Gears of War 2 (Epic Games)
"Bigger, better and more badass ..."

Grand Theft what?
GTA IV may have gotten perfect 10's all around, but looking at this preview clip, when it comes to down and dirty shoot-'em-up destruction, this one goes to 11.

"Holdon (Modeselektor Remix)," Apparat (Things to Be Frickled: Parts & Remixes)
Speaking of down and dirty, I'd like to submit this tune to the folks at Epic Games for consideration for the Locust Horde motivational soundtrack.

Mike Errico, Senior Online Editor

"Lay It Down," Al Green
Everything that made him one of the greatest is here. And it's new.

"The Bones of You," Elbow
Brit flamenco-art brilliance that has recently torn up midsize venues across the U.S. Maybe you were lucky enough to catch a show. The indoctrinated can find out the origin of this song in our video interview with lead singer Guy Garvey.

"Words," Missing Persons
The first thing I thought of when I first heard Santogold.

Jamba Juice
The corporate mommy bird that'll administer prechewed nutrients in ways a girlfriend seldom will.

Stan Horaczek, Contributing Editor

"Less Talk, More Rock," Propagandhi
You might not agree with the ultraliberal lyrics, but the only way you'll get the songs out of your head will be to dig them out with the sharp part of a "Vote for Nader" pin.

Diablo Freeride Park, Vernon, New Jersey
I'm sure my coworkers are sick of hearing me talk about mountain bikes by now, but I would rather be riding at this mountain than standing in front of some kind of futuristic orgasm ray.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, "The Gang Dances Their Asses Off" episode
I've seen this episode a hundred times, and I both love and hate it. Sure, it brings me great joy and laughter, but it also makes me insanely jealous that I'll never be as funny as these guys.

"Bostons," Have Heart
One of Boston's biggest straight-edge bands today put up a new track on their MySpace, and it rules. Play it out loud, and it'll slap the PBR out of your hipster hand.

Skippy Natural Peanut Butter
We're in a recession, people. PB&J is our friend. This is the natural stuff, only they use some magic so that you don't have to stir the oil back in every time.

Jordan Burchette,
Executive Editor

Lay It Down, Al Green (Blue Note)
The Rev.'s recent releases of the last several years seem perfectly adequate until you throw on this throwback. Production and accompaniment by accomplished fans ?uestlove, Anthony Hamilton and John Legend will make you want to party like it's 1974.

Thor (Marvel)
Resuscitates the god of thunder following a three-year absence by dropping him in a field just outside Oklahoma City. As you can imagine, he's pretty pissed, making for grueling battle scenes with frost giants and even more intense civic meetings with his new neighbors.

Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar)
It's everything they say it is. And by "they," I mean the Parents Television Council, for whom I'm still holding out hope for an unlockable killing spree mission.
