Editors' Picks: August 2008

Blender July 16 2008

Ryan Dombal, Blogger

"Lookin' Boy," Hotstylz (feat. Yung Joc)
Like an entire classic '80s Eddie Murphy movie squeezed into one hilarious hip-hop video.

"Girls Do What They Want," The Maine
The universal high school experience summed up in one Warped-approved hook: "Girls do what they want/Boys do what they can."

"If I Never See Your Face Again," Rihanna and Maroon 5
Rihanna even makes Adam Levine (sorta) interesting on this one. And they said it couldn't be done.

Tango & Cash
What's missing from nearly every summer blockbuster nowadays — chemistry.

"Forever," Chris Brown
Chris Brown + AutoTune + '80s techno = The Future!

Mike Errico, Senior Editor

f, monday, orange, february, venus, lunatic, 1 or 13, Colourmusic
I liked the sunny Polyphonic Spree–inspired vocals and the dry guitars, but I really appreciated that, instead of a press sheet that would tell me about the band, the CD arrived taped into a copy of Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham. I love that book!

Talking Through Tin Cans, The Morning Benders
Why, oh why can't I stop toe-tapping through this one. Beatles touches in all the right places, and winks and nods every two seconds. A summertime reminder that pop music is, oh yeah ... fun.

Julien McNab, Executive Editor

The Teenagers Remix of Air's "Mer du Japon"
A remix of sound and video, the freshness dial is in the red zone. Gotta love Jean-Claude Van Damme's goofy moves and menacing look when some breakin' usurpers appear on the scene.

"The Blood" video, The Cure
While the Andalusian sun beats down and jasmine perfumes the air and squiggles squiggle, flamenco dancers move to the music of a Catholic lad from Blackpool.

Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe, by Laurence Bergreen
It's a long ways from Seville to, well, Seville. If you thought having that gyro from your local street vendor at lunch was risky, try sailing around the world in rickety boats before the days of GPS?

Michael Mayer, "Lovefood" (Matias Aguayo Mix)
Give me love so that I can kill again?

Rafiqi's
Speaking of love food, Rafiqi's in Manhattan can't be beat for convenience, price and taste. So far there have been no negative gastrointestinal after effects. To the five Rafiqi brothers and their pushcarts: I salute thee!

Melissa Ward, Editorial Assistant

"Pretty Please (Love Me)," Estelle
I love this song's energy. Give it a listen and you'll be ready to relive your high school musical experience. Oh wait ... maybe that's just me. Yeah, don't judge.

"If We're in Love," Róisín Murphy
This song is on constant iPod rotation. The beat gets me moving every time.

Wii Fit
I'm no video game gal, but hook me up with Wii Fit and I'm golden. Hula-hooping as exercise? Heck yes!

Coupling
Oh man, BBC America has my heart with this show. Sadly, the show's been off-air for a while now, but the reruns still crack me up.

"Let's Make Out," Does It Offend You, Yeah?
This song gets in my head, sets up camp and throws a party. From the tambourine intro to the funky synth, it gets me every time. Check out these boys when they hit the States this summer. Expect to dance.

"Take a Chance on Me," ABBA
This has been on repeat since watching Ed Helms's rendition of this song on The Office.

Mamma Mia the movie, here I come.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
I don't have cable, but I Netflix this show. It's pretty funny. Check it out.

American Beauty, The Grateful Dead
Maybe it's just the summer, or the hippie in me, but this album has reentered the rotation, and is a day-at-the-beach must-have.

Brian Berkowitz, Director of Digital Media

U.F.O.S at the Zoo DVD, The Flaming Lips concert
The DVD has downloadable MP3s for all tracks and make-your-own-ringtone and make-your-own-video-mix features. And if you don’t care about those features, the full concert DVD is the next best thing to seeing Wayne Coyne live in concert.

Dr. Dog, Fate
The Philly-based band who sings about God and other really cool things. Also kinda sounds like the Beatles.

El Ten Eleven
The L.A.-based duo’s live show is a not-to-miss performance if it's in your area. It also has a new CD on the horizon, but debut and sophomore releases are definite “PayPal-What-You-Want” downloads.

Buzzin About, The Apples
Funk, jazz and turntablism from Israel.

"House of Cards" video, Radiohead
