Train Spotting: A Retrospective of (Literally) Underground Hip-Hop

photo_metrocard.jpgHere in New York City today, commuters are way up in arms over a skull-crushing combo of transit system fare hikes and service cuts proposed by the government to help deal with the current fiscal crisis. Considering our buses and trains run essentially all night, inhabitants of cities where one can easily be stranded after sundown without a car might find it difficult to sympathize with our plight. But we New Yorkers have a historic, somewhat romantic connection to our sprawling mass public transportation network—no matter what condition it’s in. Observe this brief visual retrospective: (Oh, and for buses, click here.)

Grandmaster Melle Mel - "Beat Street Theme"

MC Lyte - "Paper Thin"

Brand Nubian - "Pumps Jump Up to Get Beat Down"

Da Bush Babees - "Remember We"

Company Flow - "End to End Burners"

And this isn't technically hip-hop, but it totally is.

Watch This: A-Ha For Dummies!

Anyone who has lived through any part of the ‘80s or watched a few MTV countdowns recognizes Norwegian pop band A-Ha as perhaps the greatest one-hit-wonders ever for their classic first video. “Take On Me” was groundbreaking for its time, winning six MTV Video Awards, and, in many ways, it remains so today.
But if you’re like me, you never quite learned the words, which is somehow what makes this literal translation of those memorably bizarre moving sketches even more hilarious. I don’t want to give away too much. Enjoy.
