Jeff Buckley’s take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” helped establish the singer as the quintessential doomed romantic of his generation. Then, last year, when Jason Castro covered it on American Idol, it helped establish the singer as one of the most vacant contestants the show had ever seen. (Impressive feats, both of them.) Castro’s take was great in that it was so horrifying it made you really want to listen to the original, like right now. As a result Buckley’s version jumped back on top of Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs chart. Awesome. But by the time David Cook was announced as Season Seven’s winner we figured we would never again have to hear a reality TV star butcher this classic.

Wrong.

X Factor, the American Idol-like reality show that launched Leona Lewis, is in the final weeks of its fifth season. Whoever wins is already slated to record a version of Hallelujah that producers hope will become this year’s Christmas Number One. Once again, right-minded Buckley fans are taking to the internet in protest. They’ve organized a boycott of the X Factor single and started purchasing copies of Buckley’s version. And it’s totally working. Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” is now at number 43 on the UK charts.

+ Thanks to a great version of "Hallelujah" sung on American Idol last week, the song is currently enjoying an unlikely resurgence as it continues to hold steady atop the iTunes chart. The Guardian gives us some historical background on the Leonard Cohen-penned tune made famous by the late Jeff Buckley.
